Legislation outlawing cruel traps prohibits the public from buying and using glueboards to catch rodents in:

  • Ireland
  • New Zealand
  • Victoria, Tasmania and the Australian Capital Territories

And use of glueboards to trap rodents also violates the animal welfare and anti-cruelty laws of:

  • Germany
  • Norway
  • Iceland

In the Netherlands, use of glueboards to trap mice and rats is banned according to the Flora and Fauna Act and the Standards for Management and Damage Control of Animals.

In 2012, the Animal Welfare Board of India declared that use of glueboards violates national anti-cruelty law.

Note: In some of these countries, a government minister can grant an exception allowing a licensed pest control professional to use a glueboard when all other methods of prevention and control have been exhausted, and there is considered a continuing serious threat to public health and food safety. Typically, any permission is accompanied by controls to ensure regular monitoring of traps and relatively humane dispatch of any animals caught.

On May 1, 2023, the City of West Hollywood California became the first city in the U.S. to ban glue traps and on February 27 2024, the city of Ojai, California became the second. See report and ordinance. And watch public hearing.
